Spirit Groups

We got spirit, yes we do!

Attention sports teams, cheer squads and local groups: We need you! School groups of all ages and community, church or civic groups are invited to compete in the Eugene Marathon Spirit Competition!  Spirit groups line the course ready to encourage participants every step of the way.  Costumes and themes are optional, smiles and enthusiasm are required.  Groups participating not only support our runner’s amazing efforts, but are also cheering to earn money for their team!

This year, we’ve upped the ante on our prizes because we want to encourage more spirit than ever before:

1st place – $1,000
2nd place – $400
3rd place – $300
4th place – $200
5th place – $100

Worried about the stiff competition this year? Don’t be! All Spirit Competition participants are guaranteed a participation prize and donation.

Sign up early to guarantee a great cheering spot. Repeat groups will be given preference for their location choices (depending on availability), and new groups will be assigned to a location along the course.

Spirit Competition Guidelines

  • Teams are required to be at their designated location ready to cheer prior to the start time provided by the Eugene Marathon Coordinator.
  • Participants must provide their own transportation to the race site.
  • Participants are responsible for their own water and snacks.
  • An adult must be present in each spirit group,
  • Any participant or spectator displaying non-sportsman like behavior before, during or after the competition may cause the team to be disqualified.
  • Teams are encouraged to pick a theme for their cheer stations and dress in appropriate costumes!
  • All teams will be judged on their overall spirit and creativity. BE CREATIVE! You can use sidewalk chalk (where appropriate), banners/signs, pom poms, glitter, music, balloons, etc. Wear crazy costumes, bring plastic guitars, paint your faces…
  • Judges will be scattered throughout the race. We have designated runners who will be judging each team. We will announce the winners the week following the event.
  • Teams will be required to send a group photo
  • Join the fun on social media! Teams can post throughout the day on social media using the hashtag #EM20SpiritGroup to further impress judges
